GALVESTON — Police released the names Monday of seven people injured in a collision that killed one man early Saturday.
Police planned to interview witnesses and expected to announce whether charges would be filed later this week, Galveston police Capt. Jeff Heyse said.
Derrick Lee Castle, 34, of Hitchcock died of blunt-force trauma from injuries suffered in a two-car crash at 2:30 a.m. Saturday, authorities said.
Police obtained names of at least six witnesses and had reports that one of the vehicles, a Cadillac, drove erratically on Broadway before the crash.
“There were plenty of people there at the accident scene,” Heyse said of the crash at 51st Street and Broadway. “We want to talk to them, to solidify what they saw.”
Castle, Sylvia Yanes, 31, and Shaketta Shirese Smith, 24, were passengers in the Cadillac driven east on Broadway by Robert Lee Thomas, 33, according to a police report released Monday.
Yanes and Smith remained in fair condition Monday at the University of Texas Medical Branch, a hospital spokeswoman said. Thomas refused treatment, police said.
Krystal Muraca, 24, and Kyle Muraca, 25, and their two children Makayla Garza, 6, and Kaylee Muraca, 3, were traveling south on 51st Street in a Chevrolet, the report states.
They suffered injuries that were not life-threatening, the report states.
A finalized accident report, listing the at-fault driver, would follow the investigation, Heyse said.
